AB 511 Summary

• Expands workers' compensation coverage for hernia, pneumonia, heart trouble, cancer, tuberculosis, meningitis, and biochemical substance exposure to include full-time peace officers, custody assistants, correctional officers, security officers, and security assistants employed by public agencies

• Removes requirement for ordinance, charter amendment, or collective bargaining agreement approval before these employee categories become eligible for workers' compensation presumptions

• Establishes presumptions that covered illnesses arise from employment, disputable only by contrary evidence, with presumption extending 3-60 months post-termination based on years of service

• Limits coverage to employees whose principal duties involve active law enforcement, custody, corrections, firefighting, or emergency first aid response; excludes clerical and office workers

• Makes technical and clarifying amendments to Labor Code Sections 3212, 3212.1, 3212.5, 3212.6, 3212.85, and 3212.9 regarding workers' compensation presumptions
