AB 801 Summary

• Extends priority enrollment registration for foster youth and former foster youth in California State University and community college priority enrollment systems indefinitely, and includes homeless youth until January 1, 2020.

• Requires qualifying institutions (except University of California, which is requested) to designate a Homeless and Foster Student Liaison within the financial aid office to inform students about available financial aid and assistance programs.

• Adds homeless youth to the scope of the Community College Student Financial Aid Outreach Program and the Student Opportunity and Access Program to receive specialized financial aid training and support.

• Waives the $46 per unit enrollment fee at community colleges for homeless youth, as defined under federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act standards.

• Defines homeless youth as students under 25 years old verified within 24 months of application as homeless by a homeless services provider, TRIO program director, or financial aid administrator, with verification status retained for six years.
