SB 1180 Summary

• Certificated employees hired on or after January 1, 2017, who are military veterans with a service-connected disability rated at 30% or more by the Department of Veterans Affairs are entitled to up to 10 days of paid leave annually for medical treatment of their service-connected disability.

• Classified employees hired on or after January 1, 2017, meeting the same military veteran and disability rating criteria are entitled to up to 12 days of paid leave annually for the same purpose.

• Qualifying leave is credited on the first day of employment, remains available for 12 months, and is forfeited if unused during that period.

• Part-time employees receive leave proportional to their work schedule (certificated employees based on days per week; classified employees based on days per week and/or months employed).

• School district governing boards may require proof that leave is used for treatment of a military service-connected disability, and collective bargaining agreements may provide greater leave rights than these minimum entitlements.
