On or after July 1, 2018, local agencies must require a written permit for installation or 25% or greater expansion of automatic irrigation systems for landscape projects serving nonresidential sites of 2,500+ square feet or residential sites of 10,000+ square feet.

Local agencies may adopt ordinances prescribing permit application fees, provided fees do not exceed the amount reasonably required to review applications and issue permits and are not used for general revenue purposes.

Property owners, property managers, landscape contractors, landscape architects, or designated agents may submit permit applications for residential landscape irrigation systems.

Repair and replacement of existing automatic irrigation system components or parts are exempt from permit requirements.

No state reimbursement is required because local agencies have authority to levy service charges, fees, or assessments to pay for the program.
