Public water systems must compile an inventory of known lead user service lines and identify areas that may contain lead service lines by July 1, 2018.

Public water systems must provide a timeline for replacing known lead user service lines to the State Water Resources Control Board after completing the inventory.

By July 1, 2020, public water systems must either determine whether lead service lines exist in unidentified areas and report findings, or provide a replacement timeline for service lines of unknown composition.

The State Water Resources Control Board must review and approve proposed replacement timelines within 30 days, with automatic approval if the board fails to act within that period.

Approved timelines must be made publicly available on the board's website and cannot conflict with federal regulatory requirements in areas located within active Superfund site cleanup zones.
