• Requires persons leaving a handgun in an unattended vehicle to lock it in the trunk, in a locked container out of plain view, or in a locked container permanently affixed to the vehicle's interior and out of plain view.

• Violation of the handgun storage requirement is an infraction punishable by a fine not exceeding $1,000.

• Exempts peace officers during circumstances requiring immediate aid or action within the course of their official duties.

• Does not apply to licensed common carriers transporting unloaded firearms in compliance with federal law.

• Allows local ordinances regulating handgun storage in unattended vehicles that were in effect before the bill's enactment to remain in effect.
