School districts and charter schools offering interscholastic athletic programs must maintain a written emergency action plan describing procedures for sudden cardiac arrest and other medical emergencies, posted according to National Federation of State High School Associations guidelines.

Beginning July 1, 2019, schools must acquire at least one automated external defibrillator (AED) for each school campus and ensure it is available to athletic trainers, coaches, and authorized persons during on-campus athletic activities and events.

Schools are encouraged to make AEDs available within three to five minutes of sudden cardiac arrest to pupils, spectators, and individuals attending athletic events.

AED maintenance must comply with manufacturer guidelines and standards set by the American Heart Association, American Red Cross, and applicable federal and state regulatory authorities.

Employees and schools are granted liability protections when using, attempting to use, or not using an AED in emergency care situations, except in cases of gross negligence or willful and wanton misconduct.
