Pet store operators cannot sell live dogs, cats, or rabbits unless obtained from public animal control agencies, shelters, humane societies, or rescue groups in cooperative agreements with other shelters.

Pet store operators must maintain written records documenting the health, status, and disposition of each animal for at least 2 years after sale, available to humane officers, animal control officers, law enforcement, and purchasers.

Pet store operators must provide prospective purchasers with a written pet return policy in writing, including circumstances under which the store will provide follow-up veterinary care for sick animals.

Supplying organizations must provide pet stores with transfer terms, animal origin information, and any veterinary records upon request.

Pet store operators must provide prospective or actual purchasers with copies of veterinary medical records for the animal; violations subject to civil penalty of $500 per animal, effective January 1, 2019.
