AB 2811 Summary

• Renames the "Fire Fighting Thermal Imaging Equipment Act of 2001" to the "Firefighting for the 21st Century Act of 2018" and establishes the SMART Firefighting for the 21st Century Pilot Program within the Office of Emergency Services.

• Selects no more than five pilot locations statewide (at least one rural, one suburban, one urban) and provides grants up to $5,000,000 per fire department for acquiring SMART firefighting equipment and training personnel.

• Requires participating fire departments to establish a labor management committee with equal representation from employers and employees before receiving grant funds.

• Creates the SMART Firefighting for the 21st Century Fund in the State Treasury to provide grants to pilot program participants upon legislative appropriation.

• Establishes a task force to evaluate pilot program effectiveness and report to the Legislature by January 1, 2021; repeals the article on January 1, 2022 unless extended by later legislation.
