Prohibits persons convicted on or after January 1, 2019 of a misdemeanor violation of willful infliction of corporal injury upon a spouse, cohabitant, or other specified person (Penal Code Section 273.5) from ever possessing a firearm.

Violation of this firearm possession prohibition is punishable by up to one year in county jail and/or a fine not exceeding $1,000, or by state prison time.

Existing 10-year firearm possession ban for specified misdemeanor convictions remains in effect, with this bill adding a lifetime ban for the specific domestic violence misdemeanor conviction.

Courts must notify the Department of Justice of persons subject to this prohibition, though restrictions may be reduced, eliminated, or conditioned under existing law.

No state reimbursement is required for local agencies or school districts as the bill creates a new crime classification under Government Code Section 17556.
