AB 93 Summary

• Revises and recasts supervised experience requirements for marriage and family therapists, clinical social workers, and professional clinical counselors licensed by the Board of Behavioral Sciences.

• Establishes new supervisor qualifications requiring at least 2 years of active licensure within the preceding 5 years, completion of supervision training, and prohibition on supervising relatives or those with conflicting relationships.

• Defines "supervision" to include responsibility for quality of services, monitoring assessment and treatment decisions, reviewing clinical records, and observing or reviewing recordings of counseling sessions.

• Requires trainees, associates, and applicants to be under supervision at all times, work as employees or volunteers (not independent contractors), and receive minimum weekly direct supervisor contact hours.

• Restricts trainees from working in private practices and prohibits associates from working in private practices until formally registered; establishes audit authority for supervisors' record maintenance.
