CA SB628

Repeals Sections 5224 and 5224.1 of the Education Code, which previously required governing boards of school districts or community college districts in cities with populations over 1,900,000 (based on 1950 census) to be elected at large in the same manner as city councils.

Amends Section 5225 to allow unified school districts that include a former city school district governed under the old Section 5224 to maintain that city board of education, with members continuing to serve out their terms as previously elected.

Effective with the 2019 election and thereafter, the Los Angeles Community College District governing board may adopt a resolution by majority vote to allow members to be elected by trustee area instead of at large.

Trustees elected by trustee area must reside and be registered to vote in their area, and are elected only by registered electors within that trustee area.
