Beginning July 1, 2019, all residential automatic garage door openers manufactured for sale, sold, offered for sale, or installed in California must include a battery backup function designed to operate during electrical outages.

The battery backup function must allow the automatic garage door opener to remain operational without interruption when power is lost.

Violations of the battery backup requirement are subject to a civil penalty of $1,000 per opener.

Beginning July 1, 2019, replacement residential garage doors cannot be connected to existing garage door openers that lack the required battery backup function, regardless of when the opener was manufactured.

Court proceedings may be initiated by local building departments, affected consumers, or district attorneys to enforce these requirements.
