Department of Housing and Community Development must investigate possible changes to building standards requiring a second method of egress from newly constructed residential garages or detached garages adjacent to single-family dwellings during the next triennial code cycle on or after January 1, 2020.

Office of the State Fire Marshal must assist the Department of Housing and Community Development in this investigation.

For attached residential garages, a doorway providing a pathway from the garage to the interior of the dwelling counts as a second method of egress.

Department may submit proposed building standards to the Building Standards Commission for approval and adoption only if it determines the changes can be incorporated without significantly increasing construction costs.
