Department of Transportation must update guidance by July 1, 2021, to specify appropriate use of positive protection measures (including automated flagger assistance devices, buffer lanes, impact attenuators, and temporary barriers) to isolate workers from traffic in work zones.

Department shall compensate contractors for optional safety devices when requested on public works projects, where updated guidance allows but does not require their use.

Department must submit a report to the Legislature by January 1, 2024, with findings and recommendations on positive protection measures used under this section.

Section expires January 1, 2025, unless extended by later enacted statute before that date.
