CA SB358

Expands the crime of mail theft to include theft from a private mail carrier's shipping or delivery route, in addition to the existing federal definition covering United States Postal Service mail theft.

Maintains existing penalties for mail theft: a fine, imprisonment in a county jail not to exceed one year, or both.

Clarifies that prosecution under this mail theft provision does not limit or preclude prosecution under other identity theft provisions in Penal Code Section 530.5.

Removes original provisions that would have prohibited entering the curtilage of residential dwellings with intent to steal packages, replacing them with the narrower mail theft expansion.

Declares that no state reimbursement is required because the act only changes the definition of an existing crime, consistent with Government Code Section 17556.
