AB 2887 Summary

• Requires schools to include procedures for responding to sudden cardiac arrest and similar life-threatening medical emergencies in their comprehensive safety plans when plans are next reviewed and updated on or after July 1, 2025.

• Encourages integration of evidence-based elements including CPR training and placement of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) on school sites in accordance with nationally recognized emergency cardiac care guidelines.

• Expands the legislative intent for school safety plan development to include local emergency medical services personnel as cooperating partners alongside law enforcement, parents, and other stakeholders.

• Applies the same medical emergency procedure requirements to charter schools through amendments to charter petition requirements for both district and countywide charters.

• Designates the bill as the "Heather Freligh Act" and imposes state-mandated local program requirements, with reimbursement procedures established for any costs determined by the Commission on State Mandates.
