Necrotizing fasciitis is an uncommon disease of tissue layers under the skin, commonly known as "flesh-eating bacteria" or virus

Most commonly caused by bacteria Group A hemolytic Streptococcus pyogenes and Staphylococcus aureus, alone or in combination

Can affect any age group and is most commonly associated with surgical procedures, though may also occur following minor skin injuries or in apparently healthy individuals

Most frequently occurs on the abdomen, arms, legs, extremities, and face, particularly around the eyes
