CA SB1008

Requires health care service plans and health insurance policies issued, amended, or renewed on or after January 1, 2025 to cover obesity treatment including intensive behavioral therapy, bariatric surgery, and at least one FDA-approved antiobesity medication.

Allows plans and insurers to apply utilization management for medical necessity determinations using the same standards applied to other illnesses and conditions.

Defines "FDA-approved antiobesity medication" as medications approved by the FDA for chronic weight management in patients with obesity, with coverage criteria limited to FDA-approved indications.

Exempts specialized health insurance policies covering only dental or vision benefits and Medicare supplement policies from coverage requirements.

Exempts the state from reimbursing local agencies or school districts for costs related to criminal violations of this act.
