Adds misdemeanor violations of Section 597(a) (animal cruelty) to the list of offenses that prohibit firearm possession for 10 years following conviction, effective January 1, 2025.

Persons convicted on or after January 1, 2025 of animal cruelty misdemeanors cannot own, purchase, receive, or possess firearms within 10 years of conviction.

Violating the firearm prohibition is punishable by up to one year in county jail, a fine up to $1,000, or both.

Courts must notify the Department of Justice of persons subject to the firearm prohibition on forms prescribed by the department.

No state reimbursement is required to local agencies or school districts for costs incurred, as this creates a new crime within the meaning of Section 17556 of the Government Code.
