Expands eligibility for paid leave of absence (up to one year without loss of salary) during work-related injury or illness to include peace officers employed full-time by counties of the eighth class, as defined by Government Code Sections 28020 and 28029

Peace officers covered under this expansion are those defined in Penal Code Section 830.31(b), which includes certain county-employed peace officers

The paid leave benefit is provided in lieu of temporary disability payments or maintenance allowance payments that would otherwise be payable under workers' compensation

Existing law already provides this benefit to city police officers, firefighters, sheriffs, probation officers, district attorney investigators, certain lifeguards, airport law enforcement, harbor police, and Los Angeles Unified School District police officers

Excludes employees whose principal duties are clerical, mechanical, or administrative rather than active law enforcement service
