On and after July 1, 2010, the late fee for vehicle registration shall not be imposed for any portion of the calendar month in which a temporary registration number plate, tag, or certificate expires.

The Department of Revenue or authorized agent may waive the late registration fee if the failure to timely register resulted from extenuating circumstances beyond the vehicle owner's control.

The late registration fee remains twenty-five dollars per month or portion of a month, with a maximum cap of one hundred dollars.

Ten dollars of each late registration fee collected is retained by the department or authorized agent registering the vehicle, with remaining fees forwarded to the state treasurer for the highway users tax fund.
