HB 10-1209 Summary

• Allows Colorado residents to voluntarily request a military branch identifier (Marine Corps, Navy, Army, Air Force, or Coast Guard) on their driver's license or identification card if they possess valid military identification, a DD214 form, or equivalent documentation of active or veteran status.

• Applicants must pay a fifteen-dollar fee in addition to standard license or identification card fees; the fee is credited to the Highway Users Tax Fund.

• The Department of Revenue may retain up to $98,538 of collected fees to offset implementation costs, with this provision repealing July 1, 2012.

• Only one military branch identifier may appear on a single identification document, and documentation is not required for renewal or reissuance of licenses bearing a military identifier.

• Bill takes effect July 1, 2010, with an appropriation of $83,088 from the Highway Users Tax Fund to the Department of Revenue's Division of Motor Vehicles for implementation.
