SB11-067: Registration of Interior Designers

• Interior designers who prepare design documents and specifications for interior finishes and nonstructural elements and file them for building permits must register with the Division of Registrations in the Department of Regulatory Agencies prior to filing.

• Applicants must demonstrate educational requirements: either a 4+ year interior design degree with 2 years of experience, or a 2+ year degree with 4 years of experience, plus passing the National Council for Interior Design Qualification examination, or equivalent years of professional experience as determined by the director.

• Interior designers are prohibited from designing structural frame systems, mechanical/electrical systems, fire-rated shafts, fire protection systems, sprinkler systems, alarm systems, and other life safety alterations.

• The director may deny, suspend, revoke, or refuse to renew registrations for fraud, misrepresentation, incompetence, substance abuse, failure to report violations, or other grounds, and may impose fines up to $5,000 per violation.

• The entire registration program is subject to sunset review and repeals effective July 1, 2021, with the registration of interior designers to be reviewed prior to repeal.
