SB 11-261 Summary

• Allows the committee (or designee) to register copyrights for original publications and editorial work ancillary to the Colorado Revised Statutes prepared by the General Assembly or its staff.

• Permits persons, agencies, or political subdivisions to publish, reprint, or distribute statutes in alternative formats (compact disks, online, electronic applications, e-books, etc.) with committee approval and upon payment of required fees and costs.

• Establishes a new subsection (2.5) requiring prior written application to the committee for anyone desiring to publish, reprint, or distribute ancillary publications to the statutes, with committee approval based on accuracy and non-detriment to state interests.

• Allows educational publications of fewer than 200 sections of the Colorado Revised Statutes without committee approval or ancillary publications.

• Imposes penalties of $250 per copy for falsely claiming publications are official statutes and $500 per copy (or applicable fees, whichever is greater) for publishing substantial portions without committee permission.
