HB 12-1140 Summary

• Removes the November 1, 2000 deadline and requires the Department of Public Health and Environment to submit annual reports on or before November 1 each year listing all state suicide prevention programs and describing their effectiveness.

• Changes reporting recipients from specific named committees to the Senate Health and Human Services Committee and House Health and Environment Committee (or successor committees) and the Joint Budget Committee.

• Requires reports submitted in 2013 and thereafter to include findings and recommendations to improve suicide prevention in the state.

• Authorizes the Department to collaborate with licensed and certified health facilities to coordinate suicide prevention services and provide oral and written educational materials to persons who attempt suicide or exhibit suicidal gestures, or to their parents or guardians if the person is a minor.

• Directs the Department to work with facilities to identify gaps in suicide prevention programs, including gaps in educational materials, available resources, and referral processes for treatment and prevention services.
