HB 12-1352 Summary

• Creates the Lower North Fork Wildfire Commission to investigate the March 26, 2012 wildfire in Jefferson County that killed three people, destroyed homes, and burned more than 1,400 acres south of Conifer, Colorado.

• Establishes a five-member commission composed of two House members (one appointed by Speaker, one by Minority Leader), two Senate members (one appointed by President, one by Minority Leader), and the Executive Director of the Department of Public Safety or designee.

• Requires the commission to investigate causes of the wildfire, its impact on the affected community, and to make recommendations for legislative or other action to prevent similar tragedies during the 2012 legislative interim.

• Mandates the commission submit a written report of findings and recommendations to the Judiciary and Local Government committees of both chambers no later than December 31, 2012, with provision for dissenting opinions to be attached.

• Commission automatically repeals effective July 1, 2014; members receive no compensation but are reimbursed for actual and necessary expenses and legislative members receive interim committee meeting allowances.
