SB-120 Summary

• Establishes requirements for qualified interior designers to submit interior design documents and specifications to county and municipal building authorities for building permit approval.

• Defines "interior designer" as a person engaged in nonstructural interior construction design who possesses either: (1) a four-year interior design degree plus two years of experience, or (2) a two-year degree plus four years of experience, and has passed the National Council for Interior Design Qualification examination.

• Requires county and municipal building authorities to accept and review interior design documents submitted by qualified designers in the same manner as other professions.

• Prohibits interior designers from working on structural systems, mechanical/electrical/plumbing systems, fire-rated elements, emergency systems, or any alterations affecting life safety; requires professional liability insurance as condition of filing.

• Effective September 1, 2012, subject to voter approval if a referendum petition is filed within 90 days of final adjournment of the general assembly.
