SB 12-170 Summary

• Authorizes auction groups to sell personalized license plates consisting of a single letter or number, creating an exception to the previous two-position minimum requirement.

• Allows buyers and subsequent buyers of single-position personalized plates to use them on vehicles, notwithstanding existing restrictions in statute 42-3-211.

• Amends Colorado Revised Statutes 42-1-406(2) and 42-3-211(3)(a) to permit the one-position plates while maintaining the standard two to seven position range for all other personalized plates.

• Revenue from the auction of single-position plates is designated to fund a program that assists persons with disabilities in obtaining benefits.

• Takes effect 90 days after final adjournment of the 2012 general assembly (August 8, 2012), unless subject to a referendum petition approved by voters in November 2012.
