SB13-180 Summary

• Extends the regulation of occupational therapy in Colorado by changing the sunset date from July 1, 2013 to September 1, 2020 for licensing of occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants.

• Converts occupational therapist registrations to licenses effective June 1, 2014, and establishes licensure requirements for occupational therapy assistants for the first time.

• Requires occupational therapists and assistants to maintain continuing professional competency, develop medical record security plans, and maintain professional liability insurance.

• Adds new grounds for discipline including inadequate supervision of assistants and aides, failure to limit practice due to physical or mental illness, and allows the director to issue letters of admonition or concern.

• Authorizes occupational therapists and assistants with physical or mental conditions to enter confidential agreements limiting their practice scope to maintain safety without formal discipline.
