Carriers cannot impose copayments for physical rehabilitation services from licensed physical therapists, occupational therapists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, or massage therapists that exceed the copayment charged for primary care physician office visits.

Acupuncturist and massage therapist services must be reasonable and necessary or the patient must be referred by a licensed physician, chiropractor, physical therapist, or occupational therapist to qualify for the copayment limit.

Copayments charged cannot exceed the amount the carrier has allowed for the specific services provided during each office visit.

Carriers must clearly disclose in health coverage plans the availability of physical rehabilitation services coverage and all related limitations, conditions, and exclusions.

The law takes effect January 1, 2016, and applies to health coverage plans issued or renewed on or after that date.
