HB 14-1166 Summary

• Permits applicants to submit concealed handgun permit applications to the sheriff of their county of residence, secondary residence county, or the sheriff who previously issued their permit.

• Allows temporary emergency permit renewals to be obtained from the sheriff where the permittee resides or where emergency circumstances exist, rather than only from the original issuing sheriff.

• Requires permittees renewing with a different sheriff than the original issuer to submit a photocopy of their permit and directs the renewing sheriff to contact the original sheriff to confirm the permit has not been revoked or suspended.

• Expands the timeframe for regular permit renewal applications to allow permittees to apply to any sheriff in their residence county, secondary residence county, or the county where they own or lease business property, within 120 days before permit expiration.

• Applies the same cross-county renewal requirements to temporary emergency permits, requiring submittal of permit copies and verification of non-revocation status with the original issuing sheriff.
