Youth sports organizations must require all employees and volunteers who work directly with youth members 5 or more days per calendar month to obtain a criminal history record check prior to starting work and every 2 years thereafter.

Employees and volunteers accompanying youth sports organizations on trips with one or more overnight stays must also obtain a criminal history record check before the trip.

Organizations may choose between a state and national fingerprint-based criminal history check through Colorado Bureau of Investigation and FBI, or a private background check by a consumer reporting agency that discloses sexual offenders and felony convictions.

Youth sports organizations cannot hire employees or approve volunteers if background checks reveal convictions for felony child abuse, felony offenses involving unlawful sexual behavior, or comparable offenses committed in other states.

Persons not required to obtain background checks must at all times be supervised by an employee or volunteer who has completed the required background check.
