Board of county commissioners in counties with governor-appointed public trustees may elect by January 1, 2017 to have the county treasurer serve as public trustee instead.

Counties electing this option must specify the expiration date of the current trustee's term and the effective date when the county treasurer assumes public trustee duties.

County boards must notify the governor and county treasurer of their election and post transfer information on the county's website; the governor must terminate the current public trustee appointment upon receiving notice.

Governor must maintain a record of counties making this election and post the information on the governor's website until the legislature amends the public trustee statute to reflect the changes.

A county electing to have its treasurer serve as public trustee shall be reclassified as a county of the third class beginning on the date the county treasurer assumes the public trustee duties.
