House Joint Resolution 16-1005: U.S.S. Colorado

• The General Assembly expresses pride in the new U.S.S. Colorado submarine and wishes success for its crew.

• The U.S.S. Colorado is a Virginia-class submarine designated SSN-788, announced by the Secretary of the Navy in April 2012.

• The submarine measures 377 feet in length, features accommodations for Navy SEALs, and carries Tomahawk missiles with a 900-mile striking distance.

• This is the fourth U.S. naval warship named Colorado and the first submarine to bear the state's name, following previous ships that served from the Civil War through World War II.

• The Navy expects to christen the U.S.S. Colorado in early fall 2016 and commission it in spring 2017, with copies of the resolution sent to the Governor, U.S.S. Colorado Commissioning Committee, Navy Leagues, and Colorado's Congressional delegation.
