Former Colorado House Representative John Robert McElderry died on March 30, 2015, and is being memorialized by the Colorado House of Representatives for his service to the state and nation.

McElderry served two terms in the Colorado State Legislature from 1977 to 1980, holding positions on the Appropriations Committee, serving as Vice-chair of Education and Finance Committees, and chairing the Rules Committee.

Prior to his legislative service, McElderry graduated from the University of Southern California in 1951 with a degree in Public Administration, served in the U.S. Air Force until 1953, and later attended Union Theological Seminary, receiving a Bachelor of Divinity in 1963 and a Master of Sacred Theology in 1968.

After leaving the legislature, McElderry served as a pastor at Wheat Ridge Congregational Church in Colorado and as Regional Chief of the United States Department of Health and Human Services beginning in 1981.
