First Territorial Assembly of Colorado adopted "Nil Sine Numine" as the territorial motto on November 6, 1861, which was officially adopted as the state motto on March 15, 1877.

"Nil Sine Numine" translates as "Nothing Without Providence," "Nothing Without the Deity," "Nothing Without Divine Will," or colloquially in early mining days as "Nothing Without a New Mine."

House declares March 15, 2016, as "State Motto Day" to honor Colorado founders and the state motto.

Colorado State Motto "Nil Sine Numine" shall be displayed in a temporary, removable banner on March 15, 2016, on the west wall of the House chamber behind the Speaker's podium below the clock.

Copies of the resolution are to be sent to Governor John Hickenlooper, the Colorado State Senate, and Chief Justice Nancy E. Rice of the Colorado Supreme Court.
