HB 17-1015 Summary

• Replaces the previous "good time" system with a new structured deduction system allowing county jail inmates to earn sentence reductions based on work, programs, and behavior

• Establishes four categories of sentence deductions: (a) one day per 15 days served automatically; (b) up to 10 additional days per 30 days for program completion; (c) up to 13 additional days per 30 days for trusty prisoners performing work; (d) up to 13 days per 30 days for inmates in alternative sentencing programs

• Caps total sentence reductions at 15 days per 30-day period, with an exception allowing sheriffs to award up to 3 additional days for extraordinary actions

• Requires each county sheriff to develop and implement a deduction program and maintain records of inmate deductions and policy violations

• Restricts sentence deductions for DUI/DWAI offenders during mandatory minimum sentences (10-60 days depending on offense severity)
