HB 17-1050 Summary

• Amends Colorado law to require county sheriffs to complete annual in-service training hours equal to the standard required for all certified peace officers by the Colorado Peace Officers Standards and Training Board, with a minimum of twenty hours.

• Allows sheriffs to complete training through the county sheriffs of Colorado, incorporated, or any other training resource agency approved by the Colorado Peace Officers Standards and Training Board.

• Permits the Colorado Peace Officers Standards and Training Board to waive in-service training requirements upon a sheriff's demonstration of just cause for noncompletion.

• Allows the Board to approve substitution of any combination of education, experience, and training deemed equivalent to in-service training requirements.

• Takes effect August 9, 2017, and applies to sheriffs' terms commencing on or after January 1, 2018, subject to referendum petition provisions.
