Local education providers may determine whether English language learner students take reading assessments in English or their native language (Spanish or other approved languages) in kindergarten through third grade.

Students with Spanish as their native language may take assessments in Spanish, with the option for parents to request an English assessment as well.

For English language learners with other native languages, assessments may be taken in the native language if an approved assessment exists in that language.

Students demonstrating partial proficiency or higher in English must take at least one reading assessment annually in English.

Local education providers must communicate assessment language requirements to parents in a language the parent understands, and may combine this notification with significant reading deficiency information.
