HB 17-1212: Colorado Aviation Special License Plate

• Department of Motor Vehicles shall issue aviation special license plates beginning September 1, 2018 or when able, for motorcycles, passenger cars, trucks, and recreational vehicles not exceeding 16,000 pounds empty weight.

• Department may discontinue the aviation license plate if fewer than 3,000 plates are issued by July 1, 2022, but existing plate holders may continue using plates indefinitely.

• Plate design shall use Colorado Aviation Business Association design but must conform to department standards and receive department approval.

• Applicants pay regular motor vehicle license plate taxes and fees plus an additional one-time fee of $25 for issuance or replacement, with the additional fee credited to the Highway Users Tax Fund.

• Applicants may obtain personalized aviation plates by paying the personalized plate fee under existing law and may transfer existing personalized plate combinations to aviation plates upon turning in original plates.
