HR17-1004: Commemoration of the Birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

• Encourages appropriate observances, ceremonies, and activities throughout Colorado cities, towns, counties, school districts, and local governments to commemorate the federal and state legal holiday honoring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

• Recognizes Rev. Dr. King's birth on January 15, 1929, and his educational achievements including degrees from Morehouse College, Crozer Theological Seminary, and Boston University.

• Acknowledges Rev. Dr. King's major contributions to the civil rights movement, including leading the Montgomery bus boycott (1955), directing the March on Washington (August 28, 1963), and inspiring landmark legislation including the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965.

• Notes Rev. Dr. King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 and was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee, after 13 years of nonviolent leadership.

• Directs copies of the resolution be sent to President Barack Obama, Governor John Hickenlooper, the Congressional Black Caucus, and Colorado's congressional delegation.
