Senate Bill 17-142 Summary

• Requires any person providing mammography reports under federal law 42 U.S.C. Section 263b to include a standardized notice when dense breast tissue is detected.

• Dense breast tissue determination must be made by the interpreting physician using Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System standards established by the American College of Radiology.

• The required notice must inform patients that dense breast tissue is common but may make mammogram evaluation more difficult and could be associated with increased breast cancer risk, and encourages discussion with their physician about screening options.

• The notice does not create any cause of action, standard of care, obligation, or duty that could form the basis for legal liability.

• Takes effect October 1, 2017.
