HB 18-1255 Summary

• Establishes the "Gabriel Santistevan Childhood Cancer License Plate Act" allowing Colorado residents to purchase special license plates for motorcycles, passenger cars, trucks, and noncommercial vehicles under 16,000 pounds.

• Requires applicants to make a donation between $25-$75 to a Colorado-based nonprofit organization designated by the Department of Revenue that has existed for at least five years and spends at least 50% of revenue assisting families with minors undergoing cancer treatment in Colorado or pediatric cancer research foundations.

• Charges an additional one-time fee of $25 for issuance or replacement of the plate, with fees directed to the Highway Users Tax Fund; regular license plate taxes and fees also apply.

• Allows the Department to discontinue the plate if fewer than 3,000 plates are issued by July 1, 2023, though existing plate holders may continue using them.

• Appropriates $8,288 for the 2018-19 fiscal year to the Department of Revenue for license plate ordering and implementation.
