SB18-160 Summary

• Expands charter schools' authority to operate alternative teacher licensure programs and induction programs alongside school districts and cooperatives.

• Adds "charter school" and "State Charter School Institute" as eligible designated agencies to organize, manage, and operate approved alternative teacher programs and induction programs for teachers, principals, administrators, and special services providers.

• Allows charter schools to employ individuals under principal authorizations and alternative teacher contracts, with the same program requirements and mentor oversight as traditional school districts.

• Updates definitions and licensure requirements throughout Colorado's teacher development statutes to recognize charter schools as equivalent to school districts in operating professional development and licensure programs.

• Takes effect August 8, 2018, unless subject to a referendum petition filed within 90 days of adjournment.
