HB 19-1130 Summary

• Requires sheriffs to possess valid or provisional peace officer certification from the Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training Board before nomination, election, or appointment to office

• Eliminates the current requirement allowing sheriffs to obtain basic peace officer certification within one year of taking office

• Moves peace officer certification from a post-election requirement to a pre-election qualification for sheriff candidates

• Applies to all persons nominated, elected, or appointed to sheriff office on or after the effective date of the act

• Takes effect August 2, 2019, unless subject to a referendum petition, in which case it requires voter approval at the November 2020 general election
