HB19-1156 Summary

• Requires electors registering to vote on or immediately prior to election day to provide identification that includes proof of citizenship.

• Accepts a valid U.S. passport or legible photocopy of passport pages as proof of citizenship and identity, or alternatively a separate document establishing identity and a separate document establishing citizenship.

• Lists acceptable identity documents including state driver's license, government ID cards, school identification with photograph, voter registration card, military cards, and Canadian driver's license.

• Lists acceptable citizenship documents including Social Security card, birth certificate, U.S. Department of State certification of birth report, Native American tribal document, and U.S. citizen identification card.

• Takes effect August 2, 2019, unless a referendum petition is filed, in which case it requires voter approval at the November 2020 general election to take effect.
