The Department of Transportation may restrict travel on state highways during icy or snow-packed conditions unless vehicles are equipped with tire chains, four-wheel drive with adequate tires, all-wheel drive with adequate tires, or manufacturer-rated winter tires with minimum 3/16-inch tread depth.

Restriction applies specifically to Interstate 70 between Milepost 133 (Dotsero) and Milepost 259 (Morrison) from September 1 through May 31 each year.

Commercial vehicles with four or more drive wheels must have chains on at least four drive wheel tires; buses must have chains on at least two drive wheel tires when required to carry chains.

Violations constitute a traffic infraction subject to penalties under Colorado law; Colorado State Patrol shall cooperate with the Department of Transportation in enforcement.

The Department of Transportation and Colorado State Patrol must meet with stakeholders during the 2019 interim to discuss enforcement methods including physical inspection checkpoints, with recommendations due by September 1, 2019.
