Senate Bill 19-025 Summary

• Requires Colorado schools to include age-appropriate information about "safe haven laws" (sections 18-6-401(9) and 19-3-304.5) in comprehensive health education if not already covered in other curriculum or programs.

• Safe haven law information must explain that children can be safely abandoned to a firefighter at a fire station, or to a staff member at a hospital or community clinic emergency center within the first 72 hours of the child's life.

• Adds safe haven law information as a new required topic under the definition of "comprehensive health education" in Colorado Revised Statutes 22-25-103, applicable to preschool through grade twelve.

• Takes effect at 12:01 a.m. on August 2, 2019, unless a referendum petition is filed within 90 days of final adjournment, in which case it requires voter approval at the November 2020 general election.
