Interior designers may prepare and file interior design documents and specifications for interior finishes and nonstructural elements in buildings of any size, height, or occupancy to obtain building permits.

Building authorities may only reject interior design filings for reasons provided by law, including local ordinances, resolutions, or building code adoption policies.

Interior designers must provide proof of current professional liability insurance when filing documents and are exempt from certain architectural licensing restrictions.

Interior designers are prohibited from working on structural systems, mechanical/electrical/plumbing systems, fire-rated shafts, fire protection systems, smoke evacuation, sprinkler systems, alarm systems, and other life safety alterations outside the scope of interior design documents.

Interior designers must maintain active certification with the Council for Interior Design Qualification or its successor organization and possess specified education and experience credentials including a degree in interior design and passage of a qualification examination.
